In the spring, each summer resident carefully cultivates his plot in order to grow many beautiful and healthy plants during the season. Most people prefer classical plants and rarely spoil the land with new and original specimens of shrubs and flowers, but there are those summer residents who prefer to renew their possessions every year. It was for them that we decided to write a little about growing cotoneaster - a wonderful plant that can be widely used by humans.
Cotoneaster is a slow-growing, not prickly shrub, evergreen or deciduous (depending on the species). Its leaves are small, alternate and ovate, the color of the bush is dark green, closer to autumn it is red with reflections. The flowering is small, pink or white, and the fruits resemble small apples.
Types of cotoneaster
At the moment, only in our country cotoneaster is represented by many varieties that successfully grow in cottages, squares and parks. Among them there are both well-known varieties and little-known ones:
- Cotoneaster edible and holly;
- brilliant and horizontal;
- aronia and ordinary;
- Alaunsky and hybrid, as well as a considerable number of interesting species of this pretty plant.
Depending on the type and acclimatization, cotoneaster can be drought-resistant and frost-resistant, can grow and develop quietly, both in clean villages and in the dusty city. Also, such a shrub is completely undemanding to the soil, which means that it can be propagated almost everywhere.
As with many other plants, with this unpretentious shrub, still, you have to tinker a bit. But this is only the first time, then everything will be very simple and the plant will immediately prove to be a great fellow, of course, if you can and will be able to provide him with the necessary care, which, by the way, will not take you much time.
The bush grows in very many regions, as it is not fastidious about various external factors and conditions. It can be found in Eastern Siberia, the Caucasus, Central Asia and Northern China. Prefers shrubs and solitary planting, and thickening, again, here it all depends on the variety.
In our regions, it is desirable to plant it in quiet places, in open areas with bright sunlight, but you can also plant it in partial shade.
The fertility of the soil and its moisture, as we have already mentioned, are unimportant for the plant, but it is desirable to adjust the composition itself. To do this, prepare the following mixture of sand, peat compost and turf land, in the proportions of 2: 1: 2. Adding lime to the soil, about 300 grams per square meter of plantings, will not hurt.
Landing and care
A bush is planted at a distance of 0.5-2 m from each other, depending on the age of the plant and the size of its crown. It deepens into the soil to the root collar, but not less than 50-70 cm. During planting, it is imperative to arrange 10-20 cm of drainage from broken brick or gravel.
Cotoneaster grows well in conditions of minimal care, which we now will devote a few lines. From the very beginning of spring, when the first heat arrives, mineral fertilizers are required to be applied to the soil - 20-25 g of urea per bucket of water or about 100 g of Kemira station wagon per 1 m2. Before flowering, in the summer, 10-15 g of sulfuric acid potassium per square meter of planting, or 60 g of granular superphosphate, is added to the soil.
Next, you should take care of the cleanliness of the soil and timely weeds. At the same time, you can water the plant, but no more than several times a month, 6-8 liters under each bush, loosen the soil and mulch with peat, 5-7 cm.
Do not forget about the pruning of the bush, which he loves. You can cut it in any shape, giving the desired shape, and not worry, as the bush grows perfectly.
In winter, cotoneaster is mulched with peat and protected from frost by bending branches. You can cover the shrub with dry foliage, which, by the way, is optional, since the plant normally tolerates our winters.
It is possible to propagate shrubs by seeds, grafting, cuttings or layering. Seeds, however, give poor germination, not more than 50%, but if you propagate cotoneaster by cuttings, the percentage of rooted plants grows significantly, especially if you create the necessary conditions - covering the film and soil from sand and peat, 1: 1.
