Cherry Hybrids with Other Fruit Trees

Cherry Hybrids (Prunus subg. Cerasus) appeared as a result of the desire of breeders to develop plants with improved characteristics. As a result, we obtained shrubs with high productivity, resistance to diseases, temperature differences and new qualities of fruits.

Breeding breakthrough

The berries of hybrid trees get the features of both crossed plants - cherries and cherry plum. (Prunus cerasifera), cherries (Prunus avium), cherries with bird cherry (Prunus padus). They have a peculiar taste and are superior to mother plants in some respects. Their disadvantages are present, but insignificant.

Cherry is often confused not only with its hybrids, but also with cherries. Nevertheless, to find out that it is a cherry tree in front of you, it is possible even by external signs. The plant reaches a length of up to 6 meters, has a gray-brown bark, pointed green leaves and saturated red fruits. Unlike cherries, cherries can tolerate low temperatures, a hybrid of crops successfully combines the characteristics of both species.

Hybrid cherries: Duke

Sweet cherry, or Duke (Duck), has a special taste. It is known that cherries have sour fruits and sweet cherries. In this case, the second is resistant to disease, and the first - frost resistance. For the first time, a plant hybrid was bred in the 17th century, but it turned out to be insufficiently resistant to cold. In the 19th century, a domestic hybrid variety was obtained, characterized by good winter hardiness.

Cherries features

In appearance, Duke is more like a cherry tree. But the size of the leaves is closer to the cherry. Duke's berries are not as sour as cherry. The main feature of the plant is its excellent resistance to moniliosis. (Monilia cinerea Bonord.) and coccomycosis (Coccomyces). Planting a red cherry should be carried out on fertile land, well protected from the wind and having access to the sun. Duke berries are suitable for fresh use and for the production of blanks.

Advantages and disadvantages of the hybrid

Of the advantages of the cherry it is worth highlighting:

  • good disease resistance;
  • large fruits - up to 17 grams;
  • high resistance to frost;
  • the sweet taste of berries;
  • rich aroma;
  • excellent yield.

Of the shortcomings, it is worth noting that Duke is self-infertile! Hybrids do not pollinate not only each other, but also cherries and cherries.

Cherry: which grade to choose

Cerepadus and padocerus

When crossing bird cherry and cherry, you can get one of two hybrids - cerepadus (cerapadus) or padocerus (padotserus).

Cerepadus is obtained as a result of pollination of bird cherry, padocerus - vice versa. At the same time, Japanese bird cherry is used for crossing.

Distinctive features of hybrids

Cerepadus received resistance to coccomycosis from his parents. In addition, it makes excellent stocks for cherries, characterized by well-developed roots and resistance to frost. By external signs, crop hybrids are more reminiscent of cherry trees. The taste of fruits cannot be called ideal, which is why they are often used for technical purposes.

Advantages and disadvantages of the hybrid

Of the advantages of the varieties, it is worth highlighting:

  • good growth;
  • hardiness to frost;
  • profuse bearing;
  • compact crown;
  • the possibility of use as stocks.

The main disadvantage is the poor taste of berries. It is worth noting that on infertile soils the plant develops slowly.

Plum flavored cherry: cherry plum

Vishnesliva (Vishnesliva) has not only good resistance to frost, but also a unique plum-cherry flavor of the fruit. The plant produces abundant crops and does not dry out during the hot season. Get a hybrid from various varieties of plums and cherries "Bessey" (C. besseyi).

Distinctive features of cherry plum

Bushes are compact, well-developed root system, the fruits on them are formed in the second year. In appearance, the berries are more like plums. The plant blooms late, it is self-fertile, therefore it requires planting pollinator varieties next to it.

Small fruits - up to 15 grams, well suited for canning. Vishnesliva propagates by horizontal layers or green cuttings.

Advantages and disadvantages of the hybrid

Vishnesliva combines the advantages of parental cultures:

  • gives up to 40 kilograms from a bush;
  • resistant to aging;
  • blooms a week later than a plum, so it does not fall under frost;
  • differs in compactness.

Of the disadvantages it is worth highlighting the following features:

  • the bone in the fruit is difficult to separate from the pulp;
  • ripening of fruits occurs in the same period, so they quickly deteriorate;
  • the taste of cherries is not as pleasant as that of plums.

Hybrid cherry plum and cherry

The hybrid tree is characterized by excellent decorative qualities. - at the time of flowering, it is as good as sakura. The height of the plant does not exceed 2 meters, in some cases the tree spreads and reaches 1.8 meters in diameter. Spring is covered with small white flowers.

Features of the cherry cherry plum plant

Hybrid tolerates frosts. The tree begins to bear fruit for 4 years, and its propagation is carried out by cuttings. It is possible to grow a variety in sandy and loamy soils. Cherry cherry plum is practically not affected by pests and diseases, careful care is not required.

Positive and negative traits of the hybrid

Culture has many positive characteristics:

  • ripening occurs after the cherry has already produced;
  • the plant is not afraid of pests and diseases;
  • every year the yield of the hybrid becomes more and more;
  • trees tolerate frosts perfectly;
  • the bones in the fruits are perfectly separated from the pulp, the taste of berries is pleasant.

Among the shortcomings, low productivity and self-fertility should be highlighted. To get the fruits, you will have to plant at least 2 plants at a distance of 10 meters from each other.

Autumn pruning of cherry trees

Breeding work on crossing cherries and other shrubs is ongoing. The hybrids obtained so far show high adaptive qualities to adverse environmental conditions, good taste characteristics and regular fruiting. However, they also have some disadvantages that have yet to be eliminated.
