Kalopanaks seven-bladed, so-called as dimorphant and white nut, belongs to the Araliev family. The birthplace of the tree is the Far East (Sakhalin, Kuril Islands, Primorsky Territory), also found in Korea, Japan, Northeast and Central China. It grows both singly and in groups in broad-leaved forests located in river valleys, low mountain slopes. In Central China, plant height sometimes reaches 2 km. At home it grows up to 25-30 m, in Russia (Moscow) - 7-10 m. In the wild, it can live up to several hundred years. In culture, dimorphant is quite rare, because it grows very slowly, and in the north it is negatively affected by a cold climate. It reacts even worse to drought, reduced air humidity. You can see it in the botanical gardens of Moscow, Ukraine, the Baltic states, Central Asia, sometimes in the Far East. In the RSFSR was listed in the Red Book.

What does he look like

White walnut is a deciduous tree with a low-set, round-ovate or tent-shaped crown; sparsely branched and having a small number of skeletal thick branches.

The best time for planting a plant is spring. White walnut propagates by seed or by shoots. Moreover, if you have chosen the seed method of reproduction, then several details should be considered. Firstly, under natural conditions, the plant is renewed with the help of seeds, but self-seeding very often freezes to the very root neck. Secondly, seeds ripen only in years favorable in weather and other conditions. Sowing should be done with seeds cleaned from pulp. The white nut should be germinated after double stratification (first warm, then cold for 2-3 months). An analogue of the warm stage of stratification can be the treatment of plants with concentrated sulfuric acid for about 30 minutes.

Delicate seedlings require shelter for the winter, or it is necessary to create wintering conditions in a cold greenhouse.

White walnut is very fond of moisture, and young plants need regular watering. Also, seven-bladed Kalopanax is very meticulous about air humidity, therefore it is recommended to sprinkle the crown during a drought. One of the advantages of white walnut is its frost resistance, which reaches -28 degrees Celsius. In this case, subsequently, the frost resistance of the plant increases with age.

Decorative features

Seven-blade Kalopanax has decorative properties during three seasons: spring, summer, autumn. But the peak of its decorativeness falls on the summer-autumn period. The most attractive are the leaves of the plant. The bark of the trunk and branches is light, silver-gray, smooth. In old trees, it acquires a darker shade and becomes longitudinally deep-bored.

Young shoots of white walnut are bare, cylindrical, olive-green in color, and have a lot of lentils. Shoots, branches and even in some places the trunk at a young age is seated with very strong spikes compressed laterally, reaching 1-2 cm in length. Often they are bent up, and also have an expanded base.

Leaves in white walnut have undeniable decorative properties. They are regular, most often crowded on short shoots with close internodes. In length and width reach 8-25 cm, naked and shiny, with yellowish beards in the corners of the main veins of the lower side of the leaf. In summer, they have a green tint, a little lighter from below. In the late autumn period, the shrub becomes yellow or yellow-red, and the leaves remain on it until frost.

White walnut blooms in July-August, but in Moscow it does not bloom. The flowers are small in size and white, collected in multicolor umbrellas 2 cm in diameter. The fruits of the white walnut are juicy, presented in the form of a ball 4-5 mm in diameter, have a blue-black color. Not edible.

The use of white walnut

Despite the fact that Kalopanaks is seven-bladed - a poisonous plant and its fruits are unsuitable for food, in addition to its decorative properties, it has some others. For example, this tree is considered honey-bearing. Its honey productivity is 5-10 kg of honey per hectare. Honey from this tree has a light color, very fragrant, and crystallizes quickly.

In addition, white walnut is used in Japanese medicine. The bark of the roots and branches is used as part of the collection for the treatment of malignant tumors. Bark extract has stimulating and antihypnotic properties. Infusions of it are used to treat bronchitis, pneumonia. In China, the same solution is also used as a painkiller for rheumatism and neuralgia. Decoction from the bark helps eliminate skin diseases, infection of wounds and ulcers.

Sometimes young stems and shoots are used as seasonings for a variety of dishes, and leaves are used as a spice.

Valuable wood with a beautiful pattern is used as ornamental material for creating decorative ornaments, interior decoration, wooden shoes, making musical instruments, furniture, even for creating lodges for hunting rifles, parquet and so on.
